Your First Brand Deal: What Actually Happens, Step by Step
The uncertainty before a first brand deal is usually worse than the deal itself. Here's roughly how it goes, so nothing catches you off guard.
It usually starts with a DM or a form email, not a phone call. Most brand outreach is a short, slightly generic message — "we love your content, interested in a collab?" It's fine to reply with enthusiasm and a couple of clarifying questions: budget range, timeline, and what "collab" means to them (a post, a UGC clip, a long-term partnership).
They'll ask for a media kit or your rates before anything else. This is the moment a one-page kit with your numbers and a typical rate saves you a dozen back-and-forth emails. Not having one ready is the single most common reason first deals stall out.
A brief follows once you've agreed on scope. The brief tells you what to say, what not to say (usually legal or claims restrictions), key dates, and any hashtags or tags required. Read it twice — missing a required disclosure or tag is the most common reason content gets sent back for revision.
Payment terms vary a lot, and it's fine to ask. Some brands pay upfront, some on delivery, some net-30 after the post goes live. Asking "what are your payment terms" before you start isn't awkward — it's a normal, expected question.
Disclosure isn't optional. Wherever you post, sponsored content needs a clear disclosure (#ad, paid partnership tag, etc.) per your platform's rules and your region's advertising regulations. Brands expect this and most will flag it if it's missing — better to have it right the first time.
One good deal is the best pitch for the next one. Deliver on time, disclose properly, and follow up with a quick "here's how it performed" message a week after posting — that's what turns a first, one-off deal into a brand that books you again without you having to pitch.
When you're ready to price that first deal and send a media kit that looks put-together on day one, Creator Command Center builds both from your own numbers in a few minutes.
